The Best Runway Alternative
Runway is a creative suite built around its own Gen models, and it now sells Kling and Seedance as well. If you want a Runway alternative with a cheaper entry plan and a free clip every day, ImageVideoAI runs five model families on one balance.
Where Runway Stands in October 2026
Runway's newest model is Runway Gen-4.5, and Runway's help center confirms it handles both text to video and image to video. A Gen-4.5 clip lasts between 2 and 10 seconds and comes out at 720p (1280×720 for a 16:9 frame), with 4K upscaling available from the Standard plan up. The pricing page also lists Aleph 2.0 and Seedance 2.0 in Pro and Fast versions, and the Pro plan names Kling 3.0, Seedance 2.5 and Nano Banana Pro. So the Runway AI video generator is no longer a single-model tool: like ImageVideoAI, it resells models made by other companies.
What sets Runway apart is everything wrapped around generation:
- Audio tools. Music, voice and sound-effect generation are included from Standard up.
- Upscaling and export. 4K upscaling from Standard, and ProRes, PNG-sequence and HDR export on Max.
- Control modes. Runway's research blog says Keyframes, Video to Video and similar modes are moving over to Gen-4.5.
- Agent and integrations. An agent Runway describes as a creative collaborator, plus a Runway MCP from the Pro plan up.
Runway ML Pricing, as of October 2026
| Runway plan | Monthly price | Yearly price, per month | Credits | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Not applicable | 125, granted once | Runway watermark; never refreshes; no extra credits for sale |
| Standard | $15 | $12 | 625 each month | Unused credits don't carry over |
| Pro | $35 | $28 | 2,250 each month | Unused credits don't carry over |
| Max | $95 | $76 | 9,500 each month | Leftover credits roll over for one month |
Gen-4.5 uses 12 credits per second, so a 5-second clip takes 60 credits. On Standard that is about $1.44 billed monthly or $1.15 billed yearly, and Runway's own note puts 625 credits at 52 seconds of Gen-4.5. Runway Gen-4 Turbo uses roughly half as many credits, about $0.72 for 5 seconds on the monthly Standard plan. Extra credits are sold in blocks of at least 1,000.
What ImageVideoAI Offers as a Runway Alternative
ImageVideoAI does one job: it turns a photo or a written prompt into a clip and lets you download it. There's no timeline, no upscaler, no sound-design tool and no model of its own. Behind the upload box are Kling, Veo, Seedance, Hailuo and Wan, and each clip has a fixed credit price that is displayed before you start.
| Topic | Runway | ImageVideoAI |
|---|---|---|
| In-house video model | Gen-4.5 and Aleph 2.0 | None; every model comes from an outside provider |
| Getting started for free | 125 credits once, with a Runway watermark | A daily 480p guest clip; a free account adds 30 credits once, fewer than Runway's 125, plus 5 a day; watermarked |
| Lowest paid plan | Standard: $15 monthly, 625 credits | Starter: $9.99 monthly, 500 credits |
| A 5-second clip on that plan | Gen-4.5, 720p: about $1.44 | Kling 3.0, 720p: 42 credits, about $0.84 |
| Longest single generation | 10 s on Gen-4.5 | A 30 s maximum, via Wan 3.0 or Seedance 2.5 |
| Highest resolution | Gen-4.5: 720p output, 4K through upscaling | 4K rendered directly by Veo's Quality and Fast tiers, Kling 3.0 and Seedance 2.0 |
| Sound | Music, voice and sound-effect generation tools | Built into renders from MiniMax H3, Veo 3.1, the Seedance 2.x line and Wan 3.0; optional on Kling 3.0 |
| Editing | Keyframes, Video to Video, agent, pro export formats | None beyond a first and a last frame |
Prompt-only work goes through a separate page, the text to video AI tool, where no photo is needed.
If you mostly used Gen-4.5 for short single shots, Kling 3.0 is the natural first test here: 3 to 15 seconds, optional sound, and multi-shot planning inside one render. The version-by-version breakdown is in our Kling AI video generator overview.
For cheap drafts, Kling 2.5 Turbo costs 19 credits for 5 seconds at 720p, roughly $0.38 on Starter, against about $0.72 for a Gen-4 Turbo clip on Runway's Standard plan. When the clip has to run longer than Runway allows, Seedance 2.5 reaches 30 seconds with audio; its five versions are set out in the Seedance AI video generator comparison.
When Runway Is the Better Pick
Runway's own tools are a genuine strength, and if your work depends on them, staying is the sensible call:
- You edit as much as you generate. Upscaling, music, voice, sound effects and ProRes or HDR export live in the same place as the model. ImageVideoAI has none of these.
- You want Gen-4.5 or Aleph specifically. Those are Runway's own models and aren't available anywhere on this site.
- You build agents or pipelines. Runway's agent and MCP have no equivalent here.
- You need the same models at a lower price elsewhere. Be aware that we aren't the cheapest route to every model either: Kuaishou's Kling app sells a 720p Kling 3.0 clip for about $0.40, and Pika sells Seedance 2.5 and Wan 3.0 clips for less than we do, as of October 2026.
ImageVideoAI is the better fit when you want a lower monthly entry price, a free clip every day, takes longer than Gen-4.5's 10 seconds, or native 4K without an upscaling step. Monthly plans and one-off packs are compared on the pricing page.
Runway Alternative FAQ
Is Runway AI free?
Partly. As of October 2026, Runway's Free plan gives 125 credits once; they don't expire, don't refresh, and can't be topped up on that plan. Every video made on Free carries a Runway watermark, and you need an account to see which models are open. Runway says Free users get a select range of models, and we couldn't confirm whether Gen-4.5 is among them.
How does Runway image to video work with Gen-4.5?
You upload a still, write a prompt, and Gen-4.5 animates it into a clip of 2 to 10 seconds at 720p, charged at 12 credits a second. On ImageVideoAI the flow is similar: upload a photo, describe the motion, choose one of five model families, and see the credit cost up front; if a render fails, the credits come back on their own.
Is Runway Gen-3 still Runway's newest model?
No. As of October 2026, the newest Runway AI video model is Gen-4.5, with Gen-4 Turbo as a cheaper option and Aleph 2.0 also on the pricing page. ImageVideoAI doesn't offer any Gen model; its closest equivalents for photo-based clips are Kling 3.0, Veo 3.1 and MiniMax H3.
Does ImageVideoAI give access to Runway models?
No. ImageVideoAI isn't affiliated with Runway and doesn't run Gen-4.5, Gen-4 Turbo or Aleph. It offers Kling, Veo, Seedance, Hailuo and Wan, paid per clip in its own credits. Runway also sells Kling 3.0 and Seedance on some plans, so check which models you actually used before you switch.
Which is cheaper per clip, Runway or ImageVideoAI?
For a 5-second 720p clip on each entry plan, a Kling 3.0 clip here costs about $0.84 against about $1.44 for Gen-4.5 on Runway Standard, and Kling 2.5 Turbo at about $0.38 undercuts Gen-4 Turbo at about $0.72. Seedance 2.5 is the exception: at 183 credits, about $3.66, it is one of our most expensive settings.
